2. Practice on fruit. Many tattoo artists got started by actually practicing tattooing simple designs on fruit. It's a decent way to get familiar with the equipment and see if it's something you can pick up and feel comfortable with. 3. Get a Tattoo Book. A great way to learn how to be a tattoo artist is by practicing designs in a good tattoo book. Pink says she "believes in karma".

The 'Stupid Girls' singer - who announced she is divorcing husband Carey Hart earlier this year - has revealed her favourite tattoo is one which says, 'What comes around goes around', because it reflects her perspective on life.

She said: "It's my only truth that never changes. I believe in karma. I believe that it comes around in both ways.

"I've watched really good people have really hard times and then all of a sudden something beautiful happens. I've seen instant karma and I've seen karma that I think takes lifetimes, and I've felt a lot of it."

Pink - who has a series of tattoos all over her body - also revealed to Inked magazine that the bows on the back of her thighs were a "drunken mistake".

Pink recently revealed she hopes turning 30 next September will provide her with even more insight into people.

She said: "I am not really angry at the world. I have let a lot more love in. I feel once you are 30, once your Saturn returns, the world puts you right side up again and gives you a pair of glasses so you can see everything clearer."

SOUTH PORTLAND (Dec 2): Just three hours after swearing in a new mayor and two councilors, the City Council abandoned a six-month effort to regulate tattoo parlors in South Portland.

Monday night, the council voted 4-3 to defeat proposed rules requiring tattoo and body-piercing shops to register with the city, undergo background checks and have regular inspections.

Since hooking up with smoking mama Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt has added several tattoos to that yummy body of his. A viewer asked him a question about his tattoos on Oprah today, and Brad clammed up real quick (see the video below).

She specifically asked him about the “ice man” tattoo on his forearm. People believe this tattoo is an image of Ötzi the Iceman, Europe’s oldest natural mummy. Seems an odd thing to get a tattoo of, huh? Papa Pitt wouldn’t open up about it, simply saying that getting tattooed with someone you love is special and personal.

Something tells me the theory that the arm tattoo is of Ötzi the Iceman isn’t true. When Brad was spotted with this funky thing on his back, everyone was super sure that it was a map of the levees in New Orleans. Seemed plausible, as Brad does a lot of charity work down in the Big Easy, trying to restore it after the devastation of Katrina. However, lady love Angelina Jolie later came out and said it was really nothing more than a doodle.

He just liked it! The picture everybody saw was kind of awkward, but it just lines up beautifully on his back, just enhances the part of the body I like…I mean, it’s meaningful in that it’s us making angles and shapes out of each other’s body, that kind of a thing.

I think my favorite of his tattoos is the one on his stomach. It’s 06/4/75 written in Khmer, which happens to be Angelina’s birthday. I can’t say I totally understand this one, but I think it’s kind of sweet.

I can’t wake up to an alarm — I don’t like it. I tell myself what time to wake up before I go to sleep. I don’t know how it works, but it always seems to. Around 8 I go for a pee, have a shower, get dressed, put my make-up on and feed the cats, Lola and Bell. I acquired them from my ex-boyfriend; I love them. I’ve grown rocket and tomatoes this year, so I make a salad for lunch and chuck a banana in to eat at work. I ride my bike to the studio, Into You, in Clerkenwell. I try to be there by 10, giving me two hours to draw.

I didn’t mean to go into tattooing — it was a total mistake. I thought I was going to be a musician: I love singing. I grew up on a beautiful farm just north of Auckland. My parents still live there — they owned takeaways on the beach. When I’d just turned 16 my art teacher gave me a really, really bad mark and my mum told her she was a f***ing cow and made me leave school. I was broke and had no qualifications, so I walked into a tattoo studio in Auckland to sell designs I’d doodled, and the guy who owned the shop fell in love with me, pretty much. I started working there and that was that.

Tattoos are like the diary of your life: every one has a memory of what was going on at the time. When you first get tattooed you see “tattoo” when you look at yourself naked. Then as you get more and you just see empty skin — everything else is coloured in and you have this one white patch. I think part of the addiction is getting rid of skin.

I’m a keen art collector: my left leg is my collecting leg — all small pieces that remind me of different friends — whereas my right leg is one piece and my arms are another. My sister, Kimshiree, moved to New Zealand and I miss her terribly. I’m tossing up whether to get her name on my wedding finger — the only part of my hand I’m not tattooed on because I’m such an old romantic.

I can have a lunch break if I like, but I tend to graze during the day. What people want goes through stages — I guess that’s fashion. At the moment I’m doing a lot of koi fish, but I’ve done some strange things in my time. I tattooed an angry duck on a dwarf’s penis. It was a cartoon duck going “Grrr”. And that was his only tattoo — he’d been dared to do it by his office. After I’d done it he said: “Can you write ‘the angry duck’ underneath?” He came back a year later and got big cartoon oval eyes on his arse.

You can’t think about how you’re hurting clients when you’re drawing a line: if you do you’re not going to put it in properly. I try to help people relax. It can be quite comfortable when you learn to relax. But it depends: if you’re female and you’ve got your period it’s more sensitive, or if you’re feeling a little bit unstable mentally.

Pretty much all my customers are amazing — they let me do what I like on them, with just a small brief. Some of them really push me and I like that: they want something extra special, with lots of detail, and it feels like I’m going up a gear. There’ll be a stage where I’ll think: “Wow, how did I actually do that?”

I was never going to be heavily tattooed. I don’t know what happened. But when I’m old it will grow with me and I’ll still look beautiful. I put sunscreen on to stop them fading. I’ve still got my back and my front to go — but I don’t know if I want my titties done — and a bit of thigh and maybe something on my face, but not until I’m older, and then I’ll be out of space and over being tattooed. You have days when you’ll be walking down the street and nobody will look at you and then you’ll have a day where every person stops you or stares. I think I scare some guys. They don’t really approach me any more. I haven’t been asked out on a date in three years.

Usually me and the girls have a cocktail around six o’clock in the studio, and I try to finish at seven. I’ve got lots of friends who are DJs and musicians. We love eating out and going to gigs and bars. If I’m not out I’ll cook dinner for me and my two flatmates and do a rough sketch for the morrow, or check my e-mails and maybe reply — I’m rubbish at that. I’ve got a massive library of art books, so I’ll flip through what to take to work the next day.

I go to bed at about midnight and put some ambient music on, really chilled and slow. Bell jumps up. I try to get her off me — she f***in’ squashes me, but she loves to sleep on my chest. I have to look at the clock next to my bed. If I don’t know what the time is before I go to sleep, I have trouble knowing what time to wake up. I say, “Go to sleep, ” and that’s it.

Devin Ferguson sits in an art-covered room, diligently doodling into a sketchbook he has set down on a leather lounge chair that looks like it belongs in the office of a prominent dentist. In a way, Ferguson's career is similar to that of a dentist: every day, he stands above clients who willingly experience pain to somehow better themselves. His focus, however, is not on dental work - it's on tattoos.

Ferguson is a tattoo artist and part owner of Liquid Courage, a local custom tattoo shop located in midtown Omaha. As one of eight tattoo artists in the shop, he draws designs by hand specifically for each of his clients, no matter how complex the designs may be.

Voted in KETV's 2008 A-list awards as the No. 1 spot for tattooing and piercing in the metro, Liquid Courage experienced a change of scenery. The shop recently moved to a new location near 75th and Pacific streets from their previous studio just south of 84th and Center streets. Ferguson described the move as "the next step to take" for the parlor; a natural progression for any small business looking for the opportunity to expand.

The shop's success comes from the ever-increasing popularity of tattoos and piercings, particularly among college students.

According to a 2003 survey conducted by and published in American Demographics, approximately 43 percent of 21-year-olds have at least one tattoo or body piercing.

Ferguson said he has noticed the local popularity of body art. He said Omaha is becoming "heavily tattooed." He credits the change in norms with the fact that tattoos and body piercings don't have the same social connotation that they had in years past.

"People are beginning to realize that tattoos are not just for bikers and hookers anymore," Ferguson said. "They're for everybody."

Liquid Courage has gained quite a following from local college students looking for custom tattoos at reasonable prices.

UNO junior Phil Manley has gotten four tattoos from the parlor. He said he chose the location after hearing about it from friends.

"People choose Liquid Courage because of reputation," Manley said. "All the people there are really nice and willing to work with you."

This focus on customer experience is one of the major goals for Liquid Courage. Ferguson said that every client who walks in gets to sit down with an artist while they bounce ideas off each other. It's a rare chance to work with an artist on a final design, as opposed to "walking in and picking a design off the wall," Ferguson said. "Everyone gets a tattoo to be original."

This dedication to custom tattooing is what led Ferguson and two fellow tattoo artists, Johnna McCreary and Jason Brown, to open Omaha's first-ever custom tattoo shop eight years ago. Since then, Liquid Courage has expanded to include eight tattoo artists and two body piercers.

For those considering tattoos, Ferguson said trends seem to be leaning towards the classics and away from the obscure. For college students, he said tattoos have been getting larger in size. He has noticed that many clients come to the parlor seeking traditional American and Japanese tattoos, ranging from simple words that carry meaning for the client to simple symbols like stars and anchors.

"Classic, simple motifs are coming back into popularity," he said. "People are looking for something timeless as opposed to era-specific."

Sophomore Jillian Endebrock's tattoo is one example. She chose to get the words "freedom," "beauty," "truth" and "love" wrapped around her ankle.

"They are four words that are really positive and beautiful, and words that should all be a part of an ideal world," Endebrock said.

While some opt for getting inked with traditional words, pictures or phrases, others opt for something a bit more obscure.

"I remember a guy who flat-out insisted on a Tasmanian devil with a jester hat on, holding a bong in one hand and a Bud Light in another," Ferguson said. "Almost nothing shocks me anymore."

In addition to personalizing tattoos, Liquid Courage attracts so many college students because of price. Ferguson said the price is based on one session per tattoo piece and on time spent for multiple session tattoos. There is a minimum price of $60 with multiple session tattoos at a rate of $100 per hour. For those looking to get inked, a deposit is required to hold an appointment, but that money does go towards the price of the tattoo.

On the other hand, Ferguson says the price of body piercings has become relatively inexpensive in comparison.

"Piercings are less expensive because there are more manufacturers out there making great jewelry," he said.

Ferguson continued to say that delicate facial piercings are most requested by females. Popular ones include nostril piercings and the Monroe, a stud on the left side above the upper lip that resembles the beauty mark on Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe's face. In contrast, males tend to do eyebrow piercings and other larger industrial piercings on the face.

While Liquid Courage has only been in business since 2000, Ferguson's dream is to be in the tattooing industry for the next 20 years.

"I'm obsessed with becoming the best tattooer and shop owner I can be," he wrote on the Liquid Courage Web site. "That way I don't have to get a real job."

Tattoo researcher preserves history, culture

Tattoos may be all the rage in modern culture, but ironically, traditional indigenous tattooing practices are waning. Working hard at documenting the history and meaning behind these fading customs is archaeologist and cultural anthropologist Lars Krutak. A doctoral student in Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Krutak has served as the anthropological consultant on National Geographic documentaries, was the co-winner of the 2003 American Book Award in Literature and is currently the technical advisor for a major tattoo Web site.

Adding to his list of unique accomplishments, Krutak is preparing to pen the first book to detail the Kalinga Batok, a more than 1,000-year-old Philippine practice that bridges tattoo ritual and nature in what he deems a "show of Kalinga artistic ability, cultural pride and status." Krutak plans to include interviews with and photographs of all living Kalinga tattooed elders in the bilingual Kalinga and English book. Titled "Voices of the Ancestors: The Living Tradition of Kalinga Batok," the tome is designed to preserve cultural knowledge for future Kalinga generations and will present a little known ancient practice to the outside world. In addition, Krutak recently worked with the sole surviving Kalinga tattooist to produce a Discovery Channel documentary that is slated to air in January 2009.

DEAR ABBY: I read the letter from "Future Skin Artist, Port Huron, Mich." (Aug. 7), the 18-year-old male who wants to be a tattoo and piercing artist and who sports 20 piercings and a tattoo. He was complaining about the stares and cruel remarks he got from people.

I am a devoted 33-year-old mom of an 8-year-old son. I have a degree in computer forensics, a successful career, 34 piercings and 20 tattoos.

I started by getting my tongue and eyebrow pierced when I was 18. I have had to deal with all the same issues, and it used to frustrate me. Over the years, I have learned a few things about dealing with people.

Most people are not trying to be rude or offensive -- they're just curious. It is essential to not be rude to them, but to smile and answer, "Of course it hurt, but it's not so bad."

Couple decide to tie the knot at tattoo parlor

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — Some say it with diamonds. But a couple wanted tattooed knuckles to seal their matrimonial bond. Tracy Fox, 24, and her 22-year-old groom, Nick Adams, tied the knot in a Waterbury tattoo parlor on Halloween, married by a justice of the peace dressed as a witch.

The couple dressed like their favorite characters from the horror flick "The Return of the Living Dead."

As part of the ceremony, Fox and Adams each had a special word tattooed on their knuckles. She chose "werewolf" because she loves werewolf movies and he chose "wormfood" because he says everyone will be worm food someday.

They later exchanged plastic rings _Frankenstein for him and Bride of Frankenstein for her — and celebrated with a black cat cream wedding cake.

Nurse Works to Change Perception of Tattoos

If the word "tattoo" makes you visualize gang members, outrageous Hollywood celebrities, or the lavishly colored patrons of the "Miami Ink" reality show, a Texas nurse researcher wants you to change your mental imagery to pictures of nurses, lawyers and business chiefs. Like the rest of the population, professionals are getting, removing and replacing tattoos more than ever before.

"There are a lot of professional women, including nurses, who have tattoos, but most put them in places where they can control who sees them," says Myrna Armstrong EdD, RN, FAAN, professor and regional dean of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing at Highland Lakes in Marble Falls. "Many dress codes prohibit them, and lots of people in healthcare facilities are not happy to see tattoos and piercings."

Armstrong has seen tattoo trends come and go while researching body art for 20 years. "One of my goals is to help healthcare professionals have a non-judgmental approach," she says. "I don't care if they want it. I'm very concerned that they know how to get it, care for it and how to remove it. About 25% of 18- to 30-year olds have them now, and it's predicted to reach 40% in a few years."

Most of them choose tattoos to reflect their internal feelings and life experiences, says Armstrong. Typically they'll think about it for a year or two. "Most don't care what others think, but they don't consider it deviant or 'in-your-face,'" she says.

Apparently the Cubs' post-season collapse had nothing to do with inconsistent pitching, a tattered bullpen, or an impotent offense. Rather, it can apparently be blamed on Jimmy Burroughs' new Cubs tattoo that has a pro-Cardinals sentiment in it. Burroughs stopped by American Rebel Tattoo Studios in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee where he got the tattoo (pictured right). Tattoo artist Deke Rivers wrote "Go Cards" as a joke and Burroughs laughed along, eventually asking Rivers to color it in, but the message remained visible. Instead of getting the tattoo fixed, though, Burroughs left it as is because the Cubs went on a hot streak. But now that the Cubs have crapped the bed, the superstitious Burroughs plans on getting the tattoo fixed. "I pretty much blame the tattoo for the Cubs losing. It kills me to have a tattoo that says 'Go Cards.'" Fortunately for Burroughs, he's also a child therapist which will surely help him deal with his masochistic tendencies. [via Fark]

Alisha Diehl wanted a tattoo like no one else could ever have. So, local tattoo artist, Tim Watson designed a Halloween scene especially for her. The tattoo includes a scarecrow, a haunted house, a jack o’lantern and a graveyard. The freehand tattoo was done in stages and has taken more than a year to complete. Diehl’s fascination with Halloween goes back to her childhood but she didn’t get her first tattoo, a teddy bear, until she was 18.

Hermosa's tattoo curbs backed

Ruling that body ink is not protected speech, a federal court judge has tentatively sided with Hermosa Beach in a dispute with a local tattoo artist suing to set up shop in the coastal town.

U.S. District Court Judge Christina Snyder ruled Monday that because a tattoo expresses the owner's speech instead of the creator's, Redondo Beach resident Johnny Anderson has no First Amendment right to ink in Hermosa Beach.

"(Anderson's) argument that his `creative and artistic impulses' are embodied in the final design does not change the fact that the customer has ultimate control over which design she wants tattooed on her skin," Snyder wrote in her nine-page opinion.

Though Snyder is expected today to issue a final ruling, Anderson's attorney did not expect a change of heart, and will likely appeal the decision to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"(The ruling) says that the process of tattooing is not expression, which is what other courts have held," attorney Robert Moest said. "I think that's wrong, but we'll see what the 9th Circuit says."

Hermosa Beach city officials were pleased with the decision Monday, but also didn't expect the case to go away just yet.

"I don't think it's the end of the process, but it's always nice when the judge agrees with you," City Manager Steve Burrell said.
